Banana Blossom Salad – or in Thai “Yum Hua Plee” (ยำหัวปลี) – is one of my absolute favourite tropical Thai salads. As so many fresh, crunchy, crispy and yummy ingredients come together in this delightful dish, it is popular all over Thailand – not just in Koh Samui…
Since decades Thai people were eating everything they could get outside in the nature and mix it up as a salad – so also this Banana Blossom Salad comes with a long tradition and also in different variations – depending at which area in Thailand you are.
For the version I make in the video main ingredients are banana blossom, minced pork, some prawns, roasted grated coconut, roasted peanuts and dry, salty baby shrimps for example.
One crucial ingredient is the sauce which adds so much flavour to this dish. For this sauce I am mixing up coconut cream, lime juice, chilli paste (Nam prik pau – น้ำพริกเผา), palm sugar and fish sauce. That way I will get this well balanced mix of various flavours.
As you can see in the video I am just mixing up all ingredients to my personal preference – measuring happens just by tasting again and again while I’m cooking. That way I can always get the flavour I am up to.
It is a dish that requires many ingredients and several steps for cooking but the result is really worth the effort. A wonderfully delicious Thai-style salad that falls into the category “Stunning”.
